At 2:45 am on December 27, 2007 (the same day former Prime Minister Bhutto was assassinated in Pakistan following her decades-long attempt to bring democracy to Pakistan), actress Mischa Barton was arrested in Los Angeles for driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of narcotics, and driving without a license. According to a press release from the sheriff's department, Barton was "straddling two lanes of traffic and failed to signal when making a turn."
Barton joins a long list of celebutantes arrested this year:
Paris Hilton: booked in June 2007 to serve time for violating terms of her probation sentence following a drunk driving plea. In January 2007, just weeks after pleading no contest, Hilton was caught driving with a suspended license. She signed a document vowing not to drive and was pulled over by cops again one month later for violating her probation. She spent 45 days in jail.
Lindsay Lohan: arrested in July 2007 for drunk driving and cocaine possession after police spotted her SUV engaged in a high speed chase. Lohan spent less than an hour in a Los Angeles jail before being released.
Nicole Richie: arrested on August 23, 2007 after surrendering to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for a DUI conviction. Released after spending 82 minutes in jail.
Michelle Rodriguez: "Lost" actress booked in December 2007 to serve a six-month sentence for failing to complete her community service and the alcohol monitoring that was required as part of probation from an earlier drunk driving arrest.
Britney Spears: turned herself in on October 16, 2007 to be booked on misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run and driving without a valid California driver's license.
During a Larry King Live interview following her time in jail, King asked Paris Hilton: “What don't you like about Paris Hilton? What's a personality trait Paris Hilton would change?”
This was Paris’ big chance to right her wrongs—to set the record straight. Her response?
“Something -- when I get nervous or shy, my voice gets really high…and that's something I don't like that I do. I like when I talk in my normal voice, but sometimes I go down, and that's something I'm trying to change about myself.”
It's no wonder that granddaddy hotel magnate Baron Hilton announced yesterday that he's leaving 97% of his fortune to charity.
Should we hate these women for being beautiful? Nah, we just can't stand them for being so unbelievably irresponsible in a world that needs them to grow up and make a decent contribution.
