MySpace and Me

Cyberspace is too crowded, but MySpace offers rich content

Sick of hearing about websites, dating sites and computer sites in general? MySpace is packed with such amazing content it can't and shouldn't be ignored

According to Alexa Internet, MySpace is currently the world's sixth most popular English-language website and the sixth most popular website in any language,[2] and the third most popular website in the United States, though it has topped the chart on various weeks[3]. The service has gradually gained more popularity than similar websites to achieve nearly 80% of visits to online social networking websites.[3] It has become an increasingly influential part of contemporary popular culture, especially in English speaking countries.[Wikipedia.com/History: MySpace.com]

Future candidates for the 2008 elections already have their Profiles up and running, so are folks in China. Much discontentment between different countries and cultures has arisen, that it is clear that MySpace is having a global impact.

Fortunately, it’s not quite that simple. MySpace contains such vast self-expression, free and user friendly, literally anyone can become a virtual presence complete with all they may or may not have to offer. A member of MySpace, by the name of "Nothing" has posted a profile that fills one's screen with a black abyss. Many of these unusual users are diligent to maintain their identities, never breaking character, as it were. Some members have secret profiles, for friends (real ones) only.

The site has become very user friendly and even the novice can post an impressive site. Five years ago, one would have had to hire a web designer and pay a hefty price for this type of quality, in both design and maintenance. The other compelling thing about the MySpace concept is that it is free. This site offers a great amount of praise and controversy, however, in a global “peaceful” world – how is that necessarily a bad thing?

Anyone with a valid “e-mail address” and a computer can become a free member of MySpace and create a profile. It is difficult to determine which part of the process is more enjoyable. Creating sites, or getting them up and running? Once a member creates a profile, that user’s name can be anonymous, as MySpace guards users’ identities very satisfactorily. Each member has a maintained Contact Block that allows members to ask for Friends, Networking, Dating, Music, Humor, Art, Film and Music.

It’s all there. So impressive are the thousands of Profiles, it is difficult to chose which one should receive the honors. Aunt Toni from the Midwest offers an impressive collection of friends, who are all “objects.” A posthumous site features a young singer, Dawn, who lost her battle with cancer several years ago. That does not stop her band from maintaining her site on MySpace and they are currently seeking a new lead singer.

User beware: MySpace is highly addictive and may cause terminal amusement, amazement and very serious friendships.
